Pain Circuit

Takuya Kaneko, Graduate Student (Ye Laboratory) Department of Cell and Developmental Biology, University of Michigan Medical School

Fruit fly larvae have pain-sensing neurons that are distributed over the entire body wall. When these neurons sense pain, signals travel from the body wall into the central nervous system (CNS), where all the pain-sensing neurons terminate in a ladder-like structure shown here.  A recently invented multicolor labeling technique, called “Brainbow”, paints individual neurons within the ladder with different colors. Since the color is genetically determined, all of the neurons that are derived from the same stem cell will be labeled with the same color, facilitating the study of the development of these types of neuronal networks. This image utilizes a new generation of Brainbow labeling that was developed by Dr. Dawen Cai in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of Michigan Medical School.
